இந்துக்கள் புனிதமாக நினைக்கும் சபர்மதி ஆற்றில் பல தொழிற்சாலைகளின் கழிவுகள் அளவுக்கதிமாக குவிந்ததால் இன்று நாட்டின் மிகவும் மோசமாக சுகாதாரம் குறைந்த ஆறுகளில் மூன்றாவது இடத்தில் உள்ளது. இன்னும் சில மாதங்களில் முதல் இடத்துக்குக் கூட வரலாம். கார்பரேட் கம்பெனிகளுக்கு நாட்டின் நீர் வளத்தை தாரை வார்த்துக் கொடுத்து விட்டு 'குஜராத் ஒளிர்கிறது' என்ற வெற்று கோஷத்தை போட மோடி ஒருவரால்தான் முடியும். கடைசி படத்தில் ஆற்றின் குறிப்பிட்ட ஒரு பகுதியில் மோட்டார் படகில் வந்து மோடி பண்ணும் தமாஷையும் பார்க்கத் தவற வேண்டாம்.:-)

GANDHINAGAR: The sight of millions of litres of toxic effluents and domestic sewage being let into the Sabarmati at Vasna barrage will wrench any heart-especially the way the river is choked to nothing more than a toxic gutter.

Following a month-long campaign by TOI-'My City, My River'-the high court allowed a public interest litigation in April last year which demanded speedy action on controlling pollution in the Sabarmati. As fallout of the high court monitoring the issue, chief secretary Varesh Sinha has ordered a separate special-purpose vehicle (SPV) to be formed to monitor pollution in the river. One of the most potent sources of the toxic pollution is the 27-km long Naroda to Pirana pipeline and associated effluent treatment plants. The SPV would not only manage the pipeline functioning but also monitor the effluent treatment plants. Also, the government will construct a Rs 120 crore central effluent treatment plant (CETP) for the Danilimda industrial cluster to treat their waste water.
